Brighton - The Supporters Guide !
Hopefully the following information will be of some use to you if you're thinking of supporting me at the Brighton Marathon.
Race Time
The race starts at 9.00 am. I am not sure how many runners there are but I am in the red pen, relatively near to the front and should be through the start within a few minutes.
Pacing
Whilst this may go out of the window when I a) go off too fast and b) then pay for it, my basic plan is to run between 8:40 and 9:00 minute miles so you should be able to have some expectation of when to look out of the pub window as I pass.
Tracking
There are 2 ways you can track my progress around the course (again to enable you maximum time within the warmth of the pub).
The first and most accurate, but also the fiddliest, is to set up an account as www.runkeeper.com and then add me as a friend. If you then log in to this on Sunday via a web browser (NOT via an iPhone/Android app) you will see a notification that I have started a run and then be able to track me around the course realtime via GPS.
The second and easiest, though with only limited information, is to use the Brighton Marathon App (iPhone or Android) and input my number (18102). This will then tell you when I have passed the 10k, halfway, 30k and finish points.
What I look like
I am old and grey. I am greyer in real life than my online persona and look a lot f***ing older once I have run more than a mile.
I will be dressed in black shorts and a black t-shirt (it's all very slimming) with a Walton AC running vest over it. The Walton AC vest is black with 3 bright hoops on it (see above!)
I am number 18102
I will be wearing a bum bag with my energy gels and phone in, but don't mention it as it's vaguely embarrassing.
No, I will not answer my phone during the race
Post Race
I will be tired.
I am not entirely sure of my plans yet but, once I've found Emma and Poppy, will be doing some or all of the following:
In all seriousness, if you are in the vicinity of the finish as that point and would like to hook up I would love that. Please coordinate with Emma.
Next Year
In the words of the great Steve Redgrave (kind of)... "if you ever see me near a marathon again, shoot me".
